Top 4 reasons why it is good to take children running outdoors
Bucharest, March 25, 2019: Over 300 parents and children gathered on Sunday at the start of Greenfield Family Run in Băneasa Forest, the first trial run race of this year dedicated to families, part of the Băneasa Forest Run competition. The 3 km route of Greenfield Family Run was specially designed for families, the organizers putting emphasis on movement, and not on competitiveness. Before the start of the race those interested could learn how to increase their endurance, through special training. The large number of registered runners (adults and children) shows that there is an increased interest shown by Bucharest residents to practice sport activities in the family, during the weekend.
Răzvan Ionescu, the initiator of the Greenfield Family Run project, pointed out the benefits of running in the family, especially for the little ones:
1. Contributes to harmonious physical development
Sport has an important contribution to children's physical development. The little ones are in a growth process, and running helps them strengthen their muscles and body bones. According to specialists, the recommended age for starting practicing most sports is the age of 6, and for the most difficult trainings, the age of 11. The Greenfield Family Run was designed as a non-competitive route, where children and parents are encouraged to move outdoors. The easy road, paved alleys and paths, the fresh air in the forest made this race a suitable option for fun, and the effort during the run was not perceived as intense. It is very important to introduce outdoor exercise and sports in general into the lives of children, as pleasant experiences, in the form of play, to create the foundation of a healthy lifestyle. Non-competitive events such as Greenfield Family Run are the perfect opportunity to bring children into the atmosphere of running communities and outdoor events in a pleasant, relaxed and free from unnecessary pressure.
2. It increases immunity and resistance to disease
When it comes to our loved ones, their health comes first. We can easily help children keep their bodies resistant to disease by encouraging them to exercise regularly. One of the simplest and most accessible sport activities is going for a jog outdoors. The little ones will not have to learn the rules of the game, nor will they need expensive equipment. Through running, children strengthen their immune system and metabolism, which helps prevent diseases, and thus, they will cope with every season. Moreover, running also makes an important contribution to the proper functioning of the lungs, regulates breathing and improves the cardiovascular system, through the optimal circulation of oxygen in the body.
3. Reduces the risk of obesity
Exercising plays a key role in keeping weight within normal limits for each age stage, as fats, calories and toxins are eliminated through sport. For children, the risk of obesity is alarming. The latest COSI data from 2018 shows that 1 in 4 children aged 8 has weight problems and 1 in 10 suffers from obesity. Exercising, along with a healthy diet are the only ways in which children can reach a healthy weight. In addition to obesity, type II diabetes is another condition that can be prevented through practicing sports.
4. Provide a lifestyle model
Sedentary lifestyle is the main factor responsible for the increase in obesity, and more and more children prefer spending hours in front of the TV, computer and tablet, rather than exercising or practicing a sport. However, a sports partner, a friend for jogging or a cycling partner would play a motivational role in the life of the little one. Use your role as a parent and teach them to play sports. Children need to discover your example in all areas, and outdoors sports and exercising are no exception.
